Our History

In the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Four (1924), during the month of July, a small band of Christians in the vicinity of 12th Avenue and 31st Street South met at the home of the late Sis. Fannie Felton for prayer meeting. This group later founded and organized Grand central M. B. Church with the Rev. B. J. Townsend as Pastor. With constant prayer and by the Grace of God, they were able to purchase and build a sanctuary located at 1150 Dayton Street South in St. Petersburg, FL. This feat occurred approximately three years after the group first met for prayer meeting at the home of Sis. Felton.

Our next pastor was Rev. Samuel W. Williams. During the time he served, a second plot of land was purchased for an annex building. The land was purchased from Deacon and Sister Joe Dixon. During Rev. Samuel Williamson’s administration, the church name was changed from Grand Central M. B. Church to Greater Grand Central M. B. Church.

During the second term of Rev. Bennett, a new sanctuary was constructed at 1150 Day Street South. Rev. Bennett served faithfully until the Lord called him from labor to reward.

His successor was Rev. H. B. Palmer. Rev. Palmer served for a short while and ordained two Deacons.

Deacon Lewis Griffin and Deacon Rollie T. Jackson were ordained during the administration of Rev. J.J. Cleveland. The church continued to grow. Rev. Crawford was instrumental in organizing Choir #2, Choir #3, the Youth Department, the Junior Women, and the Brotherhood Department. The mortgage on the sanctuary was paid off, robes were purchased for the choirs, and a public address system was installed. Deacon Lewis Williams, Jr., Deacon Alfred Williams, Deacon Leo Godbee, Jr., and Deacon Levi Ryan were ordained during Rev. Crawford’s administrator. On June 19, 1977, Rev. Crawford resigned as pastor due to poor health.

Rev. Crawford was succeeded in leadership by Rev. Moses D. Holmes, Sr. who served as Assistant Pastor from February 1977 until he was called as Pastor on September 15, 1977. Rev. Holmes’ installation service was held February 26, 1978.

During his first year, the following accomplishments were made: a nominating committee was established, the church was incorporated, a set of by-laws were drawn up, the trustee board membership was expanded.
